Bosnian stew is a traditional and very representative dish from Bosnia and Herzegovina. The historians of the culinary customs assume that this dish has a very long tradition both in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the entire region, and that the origin most probably descends from the medieval Bosnia in which it was prepared as a traditional workers’ dish of the Bosnian miners.

Bosnian stew has gone through significant changes until today because it was originally prepared in the more modest form that it is today. From the culinary perspective, this is a typical casserole known in other Mediterranean cuisines as well.

The most common ingredients of the Bosnian stew are beef, lamb, potatoes, onions, garlic, peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, salt, pepper, cabbage…
